Mitsukoshi Ltd.’s department store in Osaka said Tuesday it will sell a limited number of New Year’s dishes for dogs that will offer canines a sumptuous and healthy meal.

It will start accepting reservations next Tuesday for 200 assorted dishes, which will come in double-tier boxes and cost 18,000 yen.

In addition to traditional New Year’s foods such as black beans, the dishes will include ham and strawberry mousse, Mitsukoshi said.

“Our Japanese cuisine chef, who is a dog-lover, supervised the creation of the dishes, which have completely taken (dogs’ needs) into consideration,” a company spokesman said.

He added that the department store also listened to the opinions of veterinarians about avoiding canine food allergies.

Since dogs should not eat salty foods, the dishes are lightly seasoned. “Humans can eat them, too, but they won’t taste much,” he said.

For chicken dishes, the department store will remove the bones and mince the meat so that owners do not have to worry about their dogs choking on the bones.
