SAITAMA – The Saitama Prefectural Assembly will hold an extraordinary session Friday to accept the resignation of Gov. Yoshihiko Tsuchiya over a political funds scandal involving his eldest daughter.
The prefectural government said Tuesday that Tsuchiya will deliver a parting address to the assembly. His resignation will take effect upon the assembly’s approval, and gubernatorial duties will be carried out by Nobuyuki Aoki, the first deputy governor.
Tsuchiya submitted a letter of resignation to the assembly chairman, Fukuji Takise, on Monday. An election for a new governor is expected to be held at the end of August.
His daughter, Momoko Ichikawa, 53, was arrested Thursday on suspicion of misappropriating 113 million yen in political funds donated to Tsuchiya, 77, between 1998 and 2002.
