Kyoto University has set up a research base for information studies with NEC Corp.'s U.S. unit, NEC Laboratories America Inc., in California's Silicon Valley.

The facility is part of a program under the university's Graduate School of Informatics, which has received government funds to help set up a research base there.

It will focus on areas like increasing the efficiency of data distribution technology for motion pictures and image recognition information, the university said Wednesday.

A university staff member will be based there and graduate students will visit to take part in research, it said.

The University of Tokyo has already opened a similar facility in Silicon Valley.
