A 66-year-old man was arrested Wednesday in Shiga Prefecture in connection with the mid-May theft of a bicycle in Ishikawa Prefecture.

Yasuji Sugimura was riding the bicycle along a national route in Nagahama, Shiga Prefecture, about 150 km from where the bike had been reported stolen, when a police officer stopped him for questioning Wednesday evening.

Sugimura told the officer he was unemployed and had no fixed abode.

A check determined that the bike he was riding had been reported stolen from a bicycle lot outside JR Nonoichi Station in Nonoichi, Ishikawa Prefecture, by a 16-year-old high school girl around May 15.

Sugimura reportedly said he was en route to Nagoya, which lies about 100 km from Nagahama as the crow flies.
