An elderly man on Sunday told police he strangled his 82-year-old wife to free her of knee pain, police officials said.

Officers arrested 89-year-old Torao Toyama of Shimonoseki on suspicion of killing his wife, Katsuko, at their home early Sunday. The officials quoted him as saying he strangled her because she was suffering from severe knee pain and had begun to show symptoms of dementia.

“I wanted to free her of the pain and I also wanted to escape the misery,” he was quoted as saying.

According to investigations, Toyama strangled Katsuko with a rope. on the ground floor of their residence at around 1 a.m. Sunday. He then told his son, who was sleeping upstairs, what he had done.

The son and his wife saw the body and called police.

Neighbors said Katsuko underwent surgery last year to implant an artificial knee joint and began to complain of severe pain late in the year.

She needed to stop and rest whenever she went for a walk outside and complained about how hard it was just to walk, they said. Toyama told them that Katsuko complained continuously of pain in her lower back and knee.
