A gangster was shot dead Wednesday afternoon while eating lunch in a family restaurant in Hikari, Yamaguchi Prefecture, police said.

Noboru Ogawa, 55, from Aichi Prefecture, was shot several times in the throat and abdomen at around 12:30 p.m. and died soon after, the police said.

Police arrested Yuji Kawaki, a 22-year-old gangster from Nagoya, on the spot.

After the shooting, Kawaki was pinned down by three of Ogawa's associates also dining in the restaurant.

Police believe Ogawa was the intended target of the shooting and are investigating the motive.

There were about 50 other people in the restaurant when the murder occurred, but no one else was injured.

The restaurant's manager, 29-year-old Hirotake Sorihashi, who was in the kitchen when the hit occurred, said he heard two shots come from the dining area.

He said he saw Ogagwa drop to the floor as diners fled the restaurant.

The restaurant is on National Highway Route 188 near Murozumi beach in southeastern Yamaguchi Prefecture.
