Two men are missing after their boat capsized in the Sea of Japan off Niigata Prefecture around 11 p.m. Saturday, the Japan Coast Guard said Sunday.

Masami Gondaira, 54, from Niigata, and Kenya Sato, 49, from Gosen in the prefecture, disappeared after their boat apparently capsized from being hit by waves as it was traveling to fishing grounds for Japanese horse mackerel, according to the coast guard.

The two had been out fishing on Gondaira's boat with three others, it said.

The coast guard rescued two of the three others on the boat, and Gondaira's brother managed to swim to shore.

There was hardly any wind and few swells at the time of the incident, they added.
