A file containing personal information on an inmate at Kawagoe Juvenile Prison in Saitama Prefecture is missing and was probably erroneously destroyed, prison officials said Wednesday.

The officials said the file, which features the inmate's date of entry into a juvenile classification home, his address, family details and criminal record, disappeared in late February when the inmate was in the process of being transferred to a prison outside the prefecture.

Eio Sato, general affairs chief of the juvenile prison, apologized for the lost data and vowed that the mistake will not be repeated.

Kawagoe Juvenile Prison houses 1,420 first-time offenders less than 28 years old who are serving terms of more than one year for crimes they committed as minors.
