A 19-year-old youth was killed after a minicar he was apparently driving collided with an overnight express train on a railroad bridge in Nakajo, Niigata Prefecture, early Thursday, according to local police.

Police said they retrieved the body of a man from the river beneath the tracks after the collision with the train, which was bound for Hakodate, Hokkaido, from Osaka.

The body was determined to be that of a university student living in Tokyo. His name was not released.

The teen was spending the New Year's holidays at his parents' home in the village of Kamihayashi, Niigata Prefecture. The car is believed to have been his mother's.
