A Philippine court next week will arraign a 65-year-old Japanese man who stands accused of raping an 8-month-old girl, a court official said Wednesday.

Police last week filed rape and child-abuse charges against Yukitoshi Matsushita of Nagoya for sexually abusing a baby, the niece of his Filipino girlfriend.

Police said Matsushita was caught on video in the act of abusing the baby on the morning of Sept. 30. The video, now in police custody, allegedly shows Matsushita engaging in obscene acts with the baby.

Philippine immigration agents arrested Matsushita on Oct. 1 at his apartment in Paranaque City, a suburb of Manila. He was turned over Oct. 3 to police for formal charging.

The video, taken by a hidden camera planted by the suspect's girlfriend, will be entered as evidence against Matsushita, police said.

Matsushita's 29-year-old girlfriend, Jessica Ebo, set up the hidden camera inside their bedroom because she suspected him of abusing the infant.

The suspicion arose when she noticed the infant vomiting Sept. 29, police said.

Rape is a heinous crime that can result in the death penalty in the Philippines.

Matsushita denied the charges in an interview with Japanese reporters last week. He is expected to plead not guilty at the arraignment.

Matsushita's passport showed he had been in and out of the country for four years. He last arrived in Manila on Sept. 23. A photocopy of his plane ticket showed he was due to return to Japan last Sunday.
