A 74-year-old woman was subdued Tuesday night in a building in Yokosuka, Kanagawa Prefecture, after threatening to leap to her death if unable to meet Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi, police said Wednesday.

Police said they received a phone call from Koizumi's local office in the building at around 10:45 p.m., saying an elderly woman was on a 5-meter by 45-cm beam near the building's landing.

Officers talked her out of jumping and took her into protective custody 80 minutes later, police said. The woman, a resident of Kamagaya, Chiba Prefecture, left her home Monday and visited the Koizumi office at noon Tuesday. to request a meeting with the prime minister.

Her daughter in Tokyo picked her up Wednesday morning, police said.
