The Russian Foreign Ministry released a statement Friday thanking the Japanese government for its decision to give $15 million in humanitarian aid, according to Russian news agency Interfax.

The aid is for Sakha, a republic in northeastern Russia that suffered extensive damage from massive flooding that hit East Siberia last month, the news agency said.

Major damage in the area includes the near submersion of towns in Sakha, Interfax said.

In a time of both misinformation and too much information, quality journalism is more crucial than ever.
