A man was arrested shortly before midnight Monday on suspicion of intruding into the Maebashi bureau of the mass-circulation newspaper Sankei Shimbun in the prefecture and brandishing a knife, police said Tuesday.

Police identified the suspect only as a 26-year-old resident of Maebashi and said no one was hurt in the incident.

The suspect gave incoherent responses to questioning, leading investigators to suspect he was on drugs, sources said.

The bureau, which is on the second floor of a three-story building, telephoned police at around 11:25 p.m. to say a man had shown up and began taking photographs before brandishing a knife, police said.

Several staffers were holding a meeting at the bureau at the time, they added.

The man then sat down on a sofa and demanded tea before stating that he was a frequent user of stimulants and would voluntarily leave the premises, police said.
