YOKOHAMA – Police said Saturday they have arrested a 54-year-old police sergeant of the Metropolitan Police Department on suspicion of molesting an 18-year-old girl on a train.
According to police, Minezo Furuta, who works at the MPD’s Denenchofu Police Station, touched the girl’s breasts on the train bound for Hachioji on the JR Yokohama Line at around 9:15 p.m. Friday.
Two other women noticed that something was wrong as the train was passing between Kikuna and Kamoi stations and asked the girl whether she had been groped, which the girl confirmed, according to police. The three women then overpowered Furuta and handed him over to police at Kamoi Station, police said.
Furuta, who had been drinking after finishing work, has admitted the allegations, according to investigators.
Seitaro Yamazaki, head of Denenchofu Police Station, extended his deep apologies to the girl and pledged efforts to prevent similar incidents occurring in the future.
