The general assembly of the Bureau of International Expositions on Friday approved Japan's revised plans to host the 2005 World Exposition in Aichi Prefecture, officially awarding the event to the central Japan prefecture.

This will be the fifth international exposition to be held in Japan, and the first since the International Garden and Greenery Exposition in Osaka in 1990.

Japan submitted its revised plan to the Paris-based BIE in September after the organization noted in February that the original plan for the exposition's facilities would damage the local environment.

The BIE's executive committee approved the revised plans in November before submitting the proposal to the general assembly.
