The 10th and final Japanese victim of the Nov. 11 fire on an Austrian funicular train was identified Friday as Tomoko Wakui, a 14-year-old girl from Fukushima Prefecture, the Japanese Embassy said.

The embassy said Wakui, a second-year student at Inawashiro Junior High School in the town of Inawashiro in the prefecture, was identified through DNA testing and other data.

Wakui was one of the 10 Japanese who were among the 155 people killed when fire gutted the funicular train inside a 3.2-km tunnel under the 3,203-meter Mount Kitzsteinhorn.

DNA tests to identify victims have been under way at Salzburg University's medical center since the accident.

The Japanese victims' families have been arriving in Salzburg to claim the remains. Japanese diplomats said all the families will leave Austria by the end of the week.

Grandfather mourns

FUKUSHIMA (Kyodo) The grandfather of Tomoko Wakui battled to control tears Saturday after his granddaughter was confirmed as the 10th and final Japanese victim of the Nov. 11 fire on an alpine funicular train in Austria. Kiyoe Wakui said he was prepared for the worst but still broke down after hearing of the news, which came on the heels of the confirmed death of another 14-year-old, Ayaka Katoono, in the same accident.

Tomoko and Ayaka were among the 10 Japanese who were killed in the Austrian tragedy, along with 145 others. The two were in Austria with a ski instructor and three other junior high school students from Fukushima Prefecture.
