A 71-year-old man died Monday after being given the the wrong blood during a transfusion at a prefectural hospital in the city of Naze, Kagoshima Prefecture, hospital sources said Tuesday.

The man, who had O-type blood, was admitted to the Oshima Hospital in Naze last Friday after suffering a stroke. He was subsequently operated on, the sources said.

Staff at the hospital inadvertently injected the man with some 400 cu. cm of B-type blood shortly after noon Sunday. He died the following morning.

Prefectural authorities said they and the police are investigating the incident.
