Pacific Rim leaders Wednesday began two days of talks on expanding Internet access so more people in the region can capitalize on the boom in information technology.

The leaders of nations in the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum are expected to also discuss whether to set a 2001 target to kick off a new round of multilateral trade negotiations under the World Trade Organization.

They will likely agree to develop and implement a policy framework to prepare member countries to deal with the IT revolution, APEC officials said.

They will also deliberate over whether to set a goal of providing every person in the region with Internet access by 2010.
