A great white shark has been caught off a town in Wakayama Prefecture.

A 61-year-old fisherman from the town of Taiji, known for its whaling, spotted the shark in the Pacific some 3 km off the town at about 8 a.m. Wednesday and harpooned it after a 30-minute battle.

The 3-meter shark weighs some 250 kg, a local fishery cooperative said.

News of the shark appearing in local waters immediately caused an uproar in the town, which is already in sea-bathing season, prompting town authorities to confirm the safety of double shark nets enclosing its swimming area.
