Summer bonuses for public-sector workers were between 5 percent and 6 percent down on last summer, according to the Management and Coordination Agency. The bonuses were received on Friday.

The bonus for rank-and-file central government workers with an average age of 35.8 came to 612,000 yen, down 5.3 percent from last summer, while that for local authority employees aged 34.8 averaged 571,000 yen, down 6.2 percent.

The total amount of bonuses paid to 4.44 million public-sector workers came to 3.47 trillion yen, down 220 billion yen.

Supreme Court Chief Justice Shigeru Yamaguchi received the highest payment, 5.32 million yen. Prime Minister Yoshiro Mori got 4.35 million yen.

Mori would have been paid a bonus similar to Yamaguchi's if he had taken office earlier than April, because the bonuses are calculated for the period from March 2 to June 1, agency officials said.

The family of the late Prime Minister Keizo Obuchi, who was succeed by Mori on April 5 and died May 14, received his bonus of 1.73 million yen.
