DDI Corp., and Teleglobe Japan Inc., an affiliate of Montreal-based Teleglobe International Inc., jointly announced March 19 that they have signed an agreement in principle for international connections to offer inexpensive international telephone service, starting from October.

The announcement follows a basic agreement in January to jointly offer international telephone services, said Yusai Okuyama, president of DDI Corp., the country's second-largest telecommunications carrier. The agreement covers access charges and payment conditions, technical conditions and operation and maintenance of the networks, Okuyama said.

With the agreement, DDI's domestic telecommunications network will be linked with the international telecommunications networks of Teleglobe International, which offer international telecommunications services between North America and 240 countries and territories.

Okuyama said the new business cooperation will enable DDI to offer international services to Japanese users at about 40 percent lower rates than the normal rates currently offered by KDD. "Carriers must prepare themselves in this inevitable environment of competition on a proactive basis. I'm confident that with the agreement today and the spirit of collaboration between our companies, Teleglobe and DDI will be leaders of the industry," said Rick Ciccone, vice president of Teleglobe International Inc.
