U.S. President Donald Trump has brokered a ceasefire in the savage conflict between Israel and Hamas.

By all accounts, the U.S. president deserves much of the credit for this important development, but there is a long way to go before there is a permanent peace. Enduring peace will demand patience, hard work and compromise among all parties to the deal. The latter, in particular, has been especially hard to come by and cannot be counted on. Nevertheless, it is required of all participants and the rest of the world must do its utmost to create the conditions for them to do so.

U.S. diplomats had reportedly been working overtime to end the Middle East conflict by Oct. 7, the anniversary of the deadly Hamas attack that launched this war two years ago. They missed that deadline by a day, as Trump announced on Oct. 8 that Israel and Hamas had agreed to the “first phase” of a plan to end the war.
