‘Borgia (Season One)’

Director: Various

Language: English

For those needing a fix of medieval intrigue after “Game of Thrones,” English-language Euro-TV series “Borgia” might be the answer. (Not to be confused with Neil Jordan’s “The Borgias.” which covers much the same territory.) “Borgia” is set in the divided Italy of 1492, an era of competing city-states. John Doman (“The Wire”) plays Rodrigo Borgia, an ambitious and ruthless cardinal who has his eye on the papacy but must fend off two rival oligarchs while tending to the indiscretions of his illegitimate children. The dialogue often becomes gobby mouthfuls of historical exposition, but there’s no shortage of conspiracy, lust and murder.
