In order to escape the current harsh winter weather, some of us might be planning a getaway to somewhere nice and warm, such as Okinawa. But for the rest of us who can't actually make the trip to Japan's delightful subtropical region and lie on a beach, there's "Little Okinawa" in Yokohama.
The city's Tsurumi Ward is known for its Okinawan community with several Okinawan restaurants, bars and shops in the area. This Sunday, railway operator Keikyu Corp. and the Okinawa Convention Bureau will jointly host the "Tsurumi-Okinawa Tsumami Walk" to promote Little Okinawa.
The event starts at the Tsurumi Ward Office, close to Tsurumi Station on the Keikyu Line. Participants will have a chance to taste Okinawan dishes at several participating shops and eateries for ¥100 to ¥300 each, including Okinawa's trademark flat noodles with lots of pork on top. Participants who complete the 9-kilometer route will be given a token gift at the end of the course, at Kagetsuenmae Station.
Registration starts at 11 a.m. and ends at 1 p.m. Reservations aren't needed, but dishes will be sold on a first-come, first-served basis.
