At the Morioka Crystal Gallery in Iwate Prefecture, Kate Thomson's brilliant collection of marble sculptures are on display till Dec. 29.
Sculpture can be created from all sorts of materials, but for this exhibition Thomson uses the play of light on gleaming marble surfaces to create vivid color changes in each piece. Because sculptures are three dimensional, each plane presents an individual aspect -- an effect heightened by lighting.
"Light has always been important in my work," Thomson explained. "Particularly in large-scale outdoor sculptures where natural light articulates the form."
