In recent years, there has been a continuing stream of shocking revelations about the level and scale of the Chinese Communist Party’s influence tactics and corruption of democratic institutions in Europe, North America and elsewhere around the world.
It sometimes seems that no political party, government ministry, educational institution or even election has been entirely free of scandals involving foreign influence operations. In the United Kingdom, such alleged influence has even touched the royal family’s Prince Andrew.
In Taiwan, a recent documentary exposed methods used by China to recruit Taiwanese influencers to promote CCP propaganda. With new legislation passed under the presidency of Lai Ching-te in response to China's interference in Taiwan's 2024 election and the attempted manipulation of opposition lawmakers to block defense spending and other laws, Taiwanese security services have arrested more CCP spies in the past year than in the previous five combined.
