As traveling become more popular among Japanese, the custom of giving omiyage (souvenirs) has become a regular part of everyday life. This exhibition looks at travel destinations in Japan, omiyage specialties, travelers and their souvenir preferences, and what happens to so many gifts.
Through 1,300 items selected from the museum's collection, the history of omiyage — from the Edo Period (1603-1868) to today — is explores, covering topics such as the reasons why people collect omiyage, aspects of Japanese culture that souvenirs can reveal, the kind of trips people take and the history behind Japan's gift-giving culture.
