A woman in Matsumoto, Nagano Prefecture, has been arrested on suspicion of murdering her two children, police said Tuesday.
Sachie Horiuchi, 37, drove to Matsumoto Police Station on Monday night and told them she had killed her children, officers said. On the day of the killings, Horiuchi had visited a child consultation office as part of a routine visit in connection with an abuse case.
Investigators found Horiuchi’s daughter, Miku, 9, and son, Kenmu, 3, bleeding from head wounds in the rear seat of her car. They were taken to a hospital but were pronounced dead with fractured skulls, police said.
According to police, Horiuchi told them she went to a mountainous area of the city late in the afternoon and battered their heads with a stone in the car.
She was also quoted as saying she, too, wanted to die. Investigators found a bloodstained rock the size of a human head in the car and burn marks in the car and on Horiuchi’s jacket. Police said they believe she killed the children and tried to commit suicide.
According to local child welfare officials, they had been notified around 1998 that Horiuchi was abusing her daughter, and the girl was temporarily placed in a shelter. In January 2003, they were told that the woman was abusing the boy, and they had been giving her counseling.
