YOKOHAMA – The body of a 21-year-old woman was found in the bathtub of a Yokohama apartment she shared with her boyfriend, who is missing, officials said Sunday.
The woman, identified as Yoshiko Hagiwara, appeared to have been dead several days when police investigators found her body at around 8:15 p.m. Saturday.
She had lived in the unit with the boyfriend since sometime earlier this year. Police have obtained an arrest warrant for the man on suspicion of abandoning a body and are trying to locate him.
The bathtub was filled with water. The body was dressed in a T-shirt and jeans, according to the Kanagawa Prefectural Police.
An autopsy is planned to determine the cause of death.
The apartment in Minato Ward belongs to Hagiwara’s boyfriend, identified only as a 27-year-old scaffolding worker. The man rented the unit in January, and Hagiwara, from Isogo Ward, moved in sometime later, according to police.
Police examined the apartment after a female acquaintance of the boyfriend alerted police Saturday afternoon that something was wrong between him and Hagiwara.
Police quoted the acquaintance as saying that the boyfriend told her Friday evening that Hagiwara “is no longer alive.”
The acquaintance said she tried but failed to get him to talk to police, and he disappeared, the officials said.
