I said that this was going to be a historically close election, that it was quite possible that one presidential candidate would carry the popular vote while the other won the presidency by capturing the Electoral College vote, and that the counting would not be conclusive on election night.

U.S. vote goes all the way to the wire
I used to say, "The only thing certain in our elections are that they will end on time." Well, the election of 2000 tops them all. Not only is it still "too close to call," this election is unlikely to end on time. Let me explain why. It all centers on Washington state and a new election law it initiates this election.

The closest U.S. presidential election in 40 years
WASHINGTON --The latest polls show that the U.S. presidential candidates are very close, with a slight edge for Texas Gov. George W. Bush. The Electoral College is also evenly divided, although Vice President Al Gore had maintained a small advantage for weeks. Now it is also within the statistical margins of error, state by state.

It's convention time again
It is convention time, folks. The Republicans meet in Philadelphia's Comcast-Spectator's First Union Center from July 31 through Aug. 3; the Democrats at the Staples Center in Los Angeles from Aug. 14 through 17. The conventions have a serious purpose. They are the supreme authorities in which the parties chart their future course of conduct and define their principles. The conventions select the nominees for president and vice president; create a platform of issues that defines the party philosophy; make rules for the conduct of party business; select officers and serve as a family reunion of the party faithful.

Bush pulls ahead in presidential polls
Texas Gov. George W. Bush continues to enhance his lead in the polls over Vice President Al Gore in the 2000 presidential race. Despite what we believe about the value of polling at this time in the contest, Bush's success on the campaign trail contrasts with Gore's constant difficulties (with staff, corruption charges and creating a "persona") and is beginning to define a pattern that may continue. Over the past week, Bush has jumped into a 52-39 lead over Gore in a CNN-USA Today-Gallup poll; up from 48-44.
