China's choice signals focus on Tokyo
The Communist Party of China will appoint Wang Yi, a former ambassador to Japan who heads the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, China's Cabinet, as foreign minister, an apparent sign of willingness by the leadership to improve relations with Japan, according to sources.

Give tourists better rail option
Regarding the Nov. 6 Kyodo article "Foreign tourism in Yamanashi plummets": If Japan is really serious about attracting more tourists, Japan Railway needs to get rid of the rule that forbids rail pass holders from traveling on Nozomi lines of the Shinkansen (bullet train). This rule might have been fair when there were only a few Nozomi trains running. That's not the case now.

Juvenile Law revision
A bill to revise the Juvenile Law, which passed the Lower House with the backing of the Liberal Democratic Party and Komeito, is now in the Upper House. The bill is designed to provide harsher treatment of juvenile offenders. Lawmakers must question whether such a move will really help to prevent juvenile crimes and rehabilitate juvenile offenders.
