And then there were three (foreign ozeki, that is)

Are surprises in store at Haru Basho?
With all eyes on the shenanigans surrounding Asashoryu in recent weeks, Hakuho’s elaborate wedding celebrations in various locations around the country, and a new nationality rule in sumo that essentially limits a stable to one foreign-born rikishi at a time (even if the rikishi does later change his nationality), few have really given any thought as to what might happen down in Osaka starting the end of next week.

Where were the Japanese voices when the overseas fans declared Asa innocent?
In the last issue of Sumo Scribblings following the Hatsu Basho, mention was made of Asashoryu's self-destructive mindset in relation to the then recent allegations that he had up and punched somebody following a night on the beer in a plush neighborhood of Tokyo.

One step at a time — sumo needs to change
As 2009 draws to a close, the sport of sumo can look back on a year largely free from scandal. Pleasing perhaps for many of the conservative elements in and around the sport, but 2010, could well prove the year in which relative young bloods in the ruling stablemaster elite take steps towards advancing a more progressive agenda.

Hakuho notches another, while Kaio once again raises eyebrows
With the presentation of the Emperor's Cup to yokozuna Hakuho on Sunday evening Nov. 29, the first decade of sumo in the 21st century came to a thundering close. Hakuho (15-0) had just dispatched fellow yokozuna Asashoryu with a wonderful uwatenage throwing technique to claim his 12th top-flight trophy to date, and excellent performances over the fortnight by maegashira men Tochinoshin (12-3), Miyabiyama (12-3) and Yoshikaze (10-5) will all be rewarded with impressive promotions next basho.

Will two of sumo's top dogs retire at Kyushu 2009?
Kyushu 2009 will, if for nothing else, be remembered as the tournament in which the old warhorse ozeki Kaio breaks former sekiwake Takamiyama's long-standing record of 97 basho in the sport's top flight. For Kaio — Kyushu will be number 98.

Life in the old dog yet: Asashoryu picks up number 24
What better way could there possibly be for a sumotori to celebrate his birthday than to be presented with the Emperor’s Cup, having earlier the same day picked up his 24th basho in a career that will, statistically, always be regarded as one of the best in sumo history?

How to view sumo up close and in person: asageiko
To many Japanese, the closest they will ever get to a sumotori — just one of several words employed in Japanese to describe a professional sumo wrestler, — is at one of the six annual honbasho tournaments held in Tokyo (3), Osaka (1), Nagoya (1) and Fukuoka (1).

Nagoya the testing stage once more — just as in 2008
As the long hot summer descends on Japan, and the people of Nagoya prepare for the annual visit of the Japanese Sumo Association, this year's basho, like that held last year, looks like being make-or-break basho for at least one rikishi in terms of reaching a career high.

Will another Mongolian yokozuna come out of the Nagoya Basho?
The Nagoya Basho 2009 is just around the corner. Several rikishi in makunouchi, notably Kakuryu of Mongolia and Aran of Russia, will be fighting at career-high ranks, yet the majority of eyes will be on one of the lightest men in the division as he strives for yokozuna promotion. That man is Harumafuji — an ozeki fighting out of Isegahama Beya in Tokyo, a Mongolian and the winner of the May Summer tournament in Tokyo last month.

Is sumo truly the Japanese national sport?
For the 140 or so years non-Japanese have known of the existence of sumo, many have referred to it as Japan's national sport. But are they correct about the status of this ancient form of wrestling found only in these islands, misinformed entirely, or just partly right?
