Suchmos' 'The Anymal' aims high but misses the mark
Of all the acts to emerge during the recent city pop revival, when the funk-inflected AOR of early-1980s Japan seemed to be coming back in vogue, Suchmos has been by far the most successful. Last year saw the sextet graduate to playing arenas and providing NHK's theme song for the FIFA World Cup — albeit one that even their most ardent fans struggled to support.

Basking in afterglow of solid sophomore album, Suchmos reflects on a stellar year
Picking one highlight from 2017 proves a tough task for Suchmos vocalist Yosuke Kasai. The past 11 months have been good for him and his six-member band. Suchmos "The Bay"
The first full album from Suchmos, titled, "The Bay," is just the kind of soundtrack you need for a Saturday night. The band's name is adapted from Louis "Satchmo" Armstrong, and "The Bay" gives a nod to the jazz legend with the kind of smooth beats and guitars that could fill one of Yokohama's small jazz spots — it's classic, but updated.

Later this month, author Shogo Imamura will open Honmaru, a bookstore that allows other businesses to rent its shelves. It's part of a wave of ideas Japanese booksellers are trying to compete with online spaces.
The story isn't over for Japan's bookstores
