Riverside restaurants in season for cherry blossom views
The Meguro River is one of Tokyo's most popular blossom-viewing venues, especially the section running through Naka-Meguro. Maybe that's because once you've had your fill of the crowds and street food, there are plenty of restaurants at hand where you can gaze out at the ethereal blooms and the fresh young foliage that follows. Be sure to book well in advance, though.

100 Yen Love: Punching your way out of an old paper bag
Boxing films share a similar arc, typically climaxing in a big bout that decides everything — at least everything relevant to the hero's fate. This does not always means triumph, as fans of the "Rocky" series know, but even in defeat the hero usually inspires respect and sympathy, at the very least for surviving a contest of a brutality that non-boxers can only imagine.

Where to sip on sakura this hanami season
While sakura are definitely a beautiful sight, their subtle flavor can also be enjoyed in a cocktail. ANA Intercontinental Tokyo (1-12-33 Akasaka, Minato-ku; 03-3505-1111; www.anaintercontinental-tokyo.jp) in Akasaka is among the best places in the capital to find such a creation.

Hanami! Sakura! Spring snacks have also sprung
I am not one to require too much of a reason to throw a mini cream puff party in the office, but Beard Papa's announcement of karintō cream puffs was a good one; so, I take the liberty of starting this spring snack write-up with our impressions.

Our guide to family hanami hot spots
The transition from winter to summer is just beginning, and that means something magical is about to arrive: cherry-blossom season. As winter loosens its grip, delicate pastel petals push their way out of gnarled sakura-tree branches — an early indicator of the warmth that will slowly envelop the archipelago.

Bourbon's sakura-flavored Mochi Chocolat an early bloomer
It's cold and the trees are still bare, but that doesn't mean you can't enjoy the cherry blossoms before they bloom. Bourbon is one of the first confectioners to join the wave of cherry-blossom-flavored goodies with the release of these bite-sized bits of white chocolate wrapped in soft sakura-flavored mochi, part of its Mochi Chocolat lineup. Bite into the treat and you'll find red- bean sauce. Unfortunately, like Japan's beloved flower, these sakura chocolates are only available for a limited time, so don't expect to see them on the shelves for very long!

It's not too late for hanami
This year's sakura (cherry blossoms) took many people by surprise — especially in the Kanto region. Unusually warm weather in March hastened the peak of the blossoms by a couple of weeks, and by early April, when all the parties by and under the sakura trees were to take place, the beautiful pink petals were scarce, if not nowhere in sight.
