Otani better off skipping World Baseball Classic than risking injury
There is no reason for Shohei Otani to participate in the 2017 World Baseball Classic.

Samurai Japan's stars have to come to grips with WBC ball
Throwing a baseball isn't rocket science. Unless, apparently, that ball is the official baseball of the World Baseball Classic and is being thrown by a member of Samurai Japan.

Time ripe for Lions hurler Kikuchi to prove worth on mound
There is a chance that by 2019, pitchers Yusei Kikuchi and Shohei Otani could both be major leaguers. In 2009, MLB scouts flocked to Hanamaki Higashi High School, in Iwate Prefecture, to flirt with Kikuchi, a fire-balling lefty, before returning a few years later to put a full-court press on Otani.

New year brings new hopes for some in Japanese baseball
Daisuke Matsuzaka pitched his final game of 2016 in the maroon and yellow of the Gigantes de Carolina in the Puerto Rican winter league. Matsuzaka threw seven innings in that Dec. 29 start, giving up three hits and allowing his only run in the seventh inning.

Free-agent compensation choices usually risky bets
The Orix Buffaloes will hope taking right-handed pitcher Kazuyuki Kaneda from the Hanshin Tigers as compensation for the Tigers signing former Buffalos outfielder Yoshio Itoi in free agency ends up being a productive outcome for the loss of such a talented player, but history isn't really on their side.

Giants stay busy during offseason
The Yomiuri Giants haven't won the Central League pennant since 2014, which might as well be 1914 in Yomiuri Land, and apparently are not going to sit idly by and watch another team take the flag in 2017.

Ramirez's leadership pivotal for BayStars
The BayStars turned the music up. Way up. It didn't matter that a wall separated the clubhouse from the room where manager Alex Ramirez was meeting with the media after a triumphant showing in the first stage of the Central League Climax Series on Monday. You could still hear the players shouting and the music blasting loud and clear.

Otani's legend grows with PL pennant-clinching win
Shohei Otani was sublime on Wednesday night. He was dazzling, superb, resplendent. He was all that and more, almost more than there are adjectives to describe him. Basically at Saitama Seibu Prince Dome on Wednesday night, Shohei Otani the pitcher was good enough, for a moment, to make you forget about Shohei Otani the batter.

BayStars could be primed to follow Carp's example in CL
The Yokohama BayStars, after 18 seasons without postseason baseball and 11 without an A-Class finish, probably weren't going to be very picky about how those two things got crossed off of their to-do list.

Fighters set up ace Otani as trump card in PL pennant race
For the past several weeks, Pacific League hitters have lived a blissful Shohei Otani-free existence. Forget the strikeouts, the 160 kph-plus fastballs and the array of knee-buckling breaking pitches. Since early July, Otani has been one of them, focused on hitting pitches instead of throwing them.

Finally, Carp looking like real deal
The Hiroshima Carp, it seems, have arrived. After a long stretch of bad years and recent seasons of being a few pieces short of a whole, the Carp are finally in the thick of a pennant race again.

Cromartie praises Ichiro, hopes own legacy gets due credit
One of the joys for Yomiuri Giants fans who packed the stands at Korakuen Stadium during the final years of the ballpark, before the team moved into the shiny new dome being built next door, was to see Warren Cromartie hit a home run then trot out to his spot in the outfield between innings and lead enthusiastic cheers of "Banzai!"

Otani's prowess at plate presents predicament for Fighters
After losing their previous two games against the Chunichi Dragons, the Hokkaido Nippon Ham Fighters needed a win Sunday to ensure they would finish their interleague slate with at least a .500 record. They won 3-2, largely because Shohei Otani rode to the rescue, striking out 12 over eight shutout innings on the mound and recording a hit and drawing two walks at the plate.

Iconic Ichiro earned new place in history
During a May segment on the ESPN program 'Pardon the Interruption,' hosts Tony Kornheiser and Michael Wilbon, former Washington Post sportswriters, were asked to choose if Jackie Bradley Jr.'s 27-game hitting streak or the suddenly blazing form of 42-year-old Ichiro Suzuki, who at the time had reeled off 10 hits in three games, were more noteworthy

Carp could take control in CL by finally solving interleague puzzle
At this time two years ago, the Hiroshima Carp were the toast of the Central League. They were hitting well, pitching even better and at 27-15 had the best record in the CL. It looked, early on, like the team might be on track for the type of success not seen since the halcyon days of the Aka-heru era of 1975-91, when the "Red Helmets" had 15 A-Class finishes and won six pennants and three Japan Series titles.

Preseason effort bearing fruit for Lions slugger Mejia
The road Ernesto Mejia took to his brilliant start to the season didn't begin on opening day, or even on the first day of spring camp. It started during a few restless days he spent in Japan while waiting to fly home after the 2015 season. He was upset with the way his year had gone, that he hadn't been able to do more to help the Seibu Lions climb higher than fourth place in the Pacific League.

Blocking rule causing confusion at home plate
One of Japanese baseball's new rules at home plate, or rather the determination to start enforcing one that was technically already in effect, has been the source of some consternation on NPB diamonds.
