Forward Wesley Witherspoon, who saw action in three preseason games for the San Antonio Spurs in 2012 as an undrafted rookie, has joined the Shimane Susanoo Magic, the bj-league club announced on Wednesday.

The 206-cm Witherspoon fills a roster spot vacated by power forward James Padgett, who was released this week.

Padgett averaged 4.8 points in 23 games, reaching double figures in scoring on just two occasions, none since Oct. 19.

Shimane is clearly looking to add more scoring punch to its offense.

A native of Georgia, Witherspoon attended the University of Memphis and appeared in 121 games (45 starts) for the Tigers during his four-year collegiate career, averaging 8.2 points and 3.7 rebounds. Before he suited up for Memphis, ESPN.com ranked him as the nation's 48th-best senior in 2008.

"My time in Memphis was well spent," Witherspoon said in a 2012 interview with the San Antonio Express-News. "It was a great four years."

Witherspoon sustained a knee injury that required arthroscopic knee surgery during his junior season at Memphis. But he made solid contributions as a senior (7.2 points and 3.7 rebounds) to demonstrate he had a future as a pro.

He also had a 17-point performance for the Spurs against the Rockets in an October 2012 exhibition game.

Witherspoon's brothers Wynton (George Washington University) and William (Air Force) also played for NCAA Division I college basketball teams.

After his college career ended in 2012, Witherspoon split time with two NBA Development League teams, Rio Grande Valley Vipers and Erie BayHawks in 2012-13, appearing in 26 games. He averaged a combined 4.7 ppg.

Since then, he has played in pro leagues in France (16 games for Hermine Nantes Atlantique of the ProB circuit, averaging 9.6 points, 3.4 assists and 1.4 steals in 2013) and the Philippines (a 12-game stint for Air21 Express, he contributed 24.6 ppg, 8.8 rpg, 2.8 assists and 2.0 steals in 2014), and, most recently, Finland, where he had a three-game stint with the Helsinki Seagulls (4.7 ppg).

The Susanoo Magic (8-18) are riding a five-game winning streak under new coach Tomohiro Moriyama. They are preparing for their first game of 2015 against the host Rizing Fukuoka (6-20) on Jan. 17, when new coach Joe Bryant is scheduled to make his Fukuoka debut.
