Compiled from wire reports Surprising Takao Suzuki upset sixth-seeded Michael Chang of the United States in straight sets Thursday to become the first Japanese male player in 13 years to advance to the quarterfinals of the AIG Japan Open.
Suzuki battled through five deuces in a fiercely contested final game of the second set to secure a 7-6 (7-3), 6-2 win at Ariake Colosseum in Tokyo and become the first Japanese player since Shuzo Matsuoka in 1988 to reach the final eight.
"I think I was thinking too much about Michael Chang's past achievements," Suzuki said after beating Chang, currently ranked 76th on the ATP Champions Race.
"In the middle of the match, however, I realized that I was playing against him, and not against his records. Chang was really excited out there and I knew I had to go all out not to disrespect him either," the 418th-ranked Suzuki said.
Suzuki, who made an early exit in the second round of the tournament last year, is scheduled to play Slovakia's Karol Kucera in the quarterfinals. Kucera upset No. 3 seed Rainer Schuettler of Germany 6-2, 6-2.
Top seed Lleyton Hewitt was in a hurry again as he crushed American Michael Russell 6-1, 6-1 to reach the quarterfinals.
Defending champion Sjeng Schalken and Chile's Marcelo Rios also booked their places in the last eight.
American James Blake upset fourth seed Jonas Bjorkman of Sweden 6-1, 7-5.
In the women's draw, top seed Monica Seles demolished sixth-seeded Italian Rita Grande 6-1, 6-2 in their quarterfinal match.
Ai Sugiyama, seeded third, defeated Pavina Nola of New Zealand 6-1, 6-4 to advance to the semifinals.
Second seed Tamarine Tanasugarn of Thailand beat American Jill Craybas 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 in a second-round match and will face Japanese wildcard Saori Obata, a 6-1, 5-7, 6-3 winner over fifth seed German Marlene Weingartner, in the next round.
