The top seed and third seed in the Toyota Princess Cup set up a semifinal clash after both Kim Clijsters and Jelena Dokic breezed to straight-sets victories Friday.

Ai Sugiyama, Japan's sole representative in the quarterfinals, went out in disappointing fashion, going down 6-4, 6-3 against Spain's Gala Leon Garcia at Ariake Tennis Forest Park.

Clijsters coasted to a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Thailand's No. 8 seed Tamarine Tanasugarn, who could do little in the face of Clijsters' power and movement as the top-seeded Belgian completed an easy victory in just 51 minutes.

"I was seeing the ball very well and am enjoying my tennis very much. I am happy with my game and am moving very well so I feel very good about the tournament," Clijsters said.

With drizzle falling outside, the center court roof was shut but Clijsters made little of the different playing conditions, saying, "I like playing indoors so the roof didn't have any effect on my game."

Third-seeded Dokic looked much sharper than in her previous day's victory over Lina Krasnoroutskaya and ironed out the problems in her serve to overpower Meilen Tu of the United States 6-2, 6-2.

"I felt much better today. It was a match where I knew I had to avoid losing my concentration and just had to keep going. I held my own serve comfortably and I knew I could break hers," Dokic said.

Asked about her chances of winning the $565,000 tournament, Dokic replied, "My goal here was to get to the semis and I have done that. Whoever I play next, I think I'll have a good chance."

Japanese No. 1 Sugiyama struggled to cope with the tactics of Leon Garcia, at 49th ranked 10 places below her in the world rankings, and made a number of unforced errors in the defeat.

"I felt a bit nervous in the warm-up and wasn't able to change my state of mind during the match. My judgment wasn't good and I couldn't get my game going," Sugiyama said.

Leon Garcia now holds a 4-0 career record against Sugiyama.

Second seed Monica Seles pulled out shortly after the start of the tournament, joining fellow Americans Serena Williams and Jennifer Capriati who withdrew earlier in the wake of last week's terrorist attacks in the United States.
