On Monday the NHK evening news reported on the opening of the Japanese Diet's extraordinary general session. Liberal Democratic Party leader Sadakazu Tanigaki was quoted in English as saying he believed that the legislators responded to Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama's speech like "Hitler Youth responding to a speech by Hitler."

Was this English translation accurate? Was the leader of the forlorn LDP actually willing to be quoted as saying this on national news? Does Tanigaki understand the horrific implications of what he said?

Should he not be aware, he should be publicly shamed and censured for ignorance. If he was aware, he should be publicly shamed, censured and perhaps required to step down. The shamed LDP has managed to make itself look even worse than its trouncing in the recent election.
