With just a few days before International Children's Day (Nov. 20), it is high time to ponder the issues in the leadup to the event. This day is marked to commemorate globally the Convention on the Rights of the Child, which was signed by the United Nations on Nov. 20, 1989, and celebrated as Children's Day.

In India this is celebrated on Nov. 14, the birth anniversary of Jawahar Lal Nehru, the first prime minister of free India who was well known for his great love of children and roses.

A child's mind was once thought to be one of pristine innocence, free of rigid ideas. Alas it is no longer now. City kids all over the world, as young as 3, have very definite views about what they do or do not want, be it food, clothes, toys or even household gadgets.
