WASHINGTON -- A lot of Democrats arrived home from the 44th national convention of their party happy that the performance of their new nominee exceeded their expectations and that the entire presentation was positive and error-free.

I joined them in a big sigh of relief after the nominee, Sen. John Kerry, made a super speech the night of July 29 -- something we all had hoped for but few thought would be as good as it was. He did what he needed to do to show humanity, compassion, strength and patriotism. We all knew he was smart so that was just an incidental addition.

Kerry was the star of the show. His running mate, John Edwards, performed the night before and got a "low A" grade. (He comes with high expectations.)
