Police have apprehended a former employee of a care facility in Saitama Prefecture following the deaths of two residents who were found bleeding and unconscious on their beds early Wednesday.

According to police, a staffer at the facility in the city of Tsurugashima called the authorities at around 4:55 a.m. after a nurse discovered the two women, who were in their 80s and 90s, bleeding and collapsed on their beds. They were housed in separate rooms on the fourth and fifth floors of the building, according to NHK.

The women had serious injuries and were bleeding heavily from their chests, according to the fire department. They were pronounced dead after being taken to hospital.

The care facility's security camera footage showed a suspicious person leaving the area.

Police are questioning the former staff member, who is in his 20s and is believed to be the person who fled the scene, about the incident, local media reported citing investigative sources.
