The Constitutional Democratic Party announced a new leadership team Thursday of mostly experienced veterans with sometimes different views to party leader Yoshihiko Noda, who chose them in the hope of shoring up the party’s base following a poor performance in July’s Upper House election.

Noda did not step down after his party, the largest opposition force, ended up with 38 seats total, the same number it had before the July poll. Instead, he appointed Lower House Budget Committee Chairperson Jun Azumi, 63, a 10-term lawmaker, as secretary general and Seiji Osaka, 66, a six-term Lower House member, as election committee strategy chairperson.

Three Lower House lawmakers, Shoichi Kondo, 67, a 10-term representative, Sumio Mabuchi, 65, an eight-term member and Harumi Yoshida, 53, a two-term member, were picked by Noda as the new executive deputy presidents.
