The Liberal Democratic Party submitted a formal proposal to revise the political funds control law to the Lower House on Friday after discussions with its junior coalition partner Komeito reached a deadlock over the handling of political funding and matters related to the sale of tickets for fundraising parties.
While individual parties customarily submit pieces of legislation once they have secured the backing of other parties in the assembly, a tight parliamentary schedule has pushed the LDP to expedite negotiations with the opposition, even at the cost of deepening a rift with its longtime ally.
With little over a month before the June 23 closing of the current parliamentary session, the clock is ticking for political reform.
