U.S. Army soldier Travis King, who was detained by North Korea in July, was in American custody Wednesday, the White House said, bringing the dramatic incident to a close more than two months after he sprinted across the border from the South.
"U.S. officials have secured the return of Private Travis King from the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK)," U.S. national security adviser Jake Sullivan said in a statement, thanking Sweden and China for their "assistance in facilitating the transit of Private King."
U.S. officials told reporters on condition of anonymity that King appeared to be "in good health and good spirits" after being transferred to U.S. custody at the Chinese border city of Dandong, where he was met by U.S. Ambassador to China Nicolas Burns.
