Japan's government said Wednesday it will extend $2 million as humanitarian aid to Hawaii to help with the damage caused by recent wildfires in Maui, as the death toll from the disaster has topped 100.

The assistance, to be offered through organizations including the American Red Cross, is intended to cover evacuation site safety, food delivery and psychological support for those affected by the fires that first broke out on Aug. 8.

"Japan and Hawaii have enjoyed a friendly relationship over the years and been engaging in active exchanges in various fields," Foreign Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi told reporters.
