Kumamoto Prefecture has marked the two-year anniversary of deadly torrential rains with ceremonies to remember those who perished in the ensuing floods and mudslides that hit southwestern Japan.

In the city of Hitoyoshi, one of the hardest-hit areas, a memorial ceremony on Sunday drew 42 participants, including bereaved family members, as well as Mayor Hayato Matsuoka and Kumamoto Gov. Ikuo Kabashima.
