The Tokyo Metropolitan Government confirmed eight coronavirus cases on Monday as the central government announced the complete lifting of the state of emergency.

The single day figure for the capital fell below 10 again after recording three, two and 14 cases on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, respectively. Tokyo has a total of 5,160 infections.

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe announced the lifting of the state of emergency for the last five prefectures — Tokyo, Saitama, Chiba, Kanagawa and Hokkaido — during a news conference Monday evening. The move came as the pace of new cases slowed in these areas.

Tokyo Gov. Yuriko Koike has said Tokyo will ease its stay-home and business closure requests step by step in the post-state-of-emergency period while monitoring the spread of infections.
