Sunday's election may put Japan in a position to rewrite its Constitution, as lawmakers who support revising the contentious document are likely to win the required two-thirds majority in the Upper House, a Kyodo News survey has found.

Released Tuesday, the survey showed Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's Liberal Democratic Party and coalition partner Komeito are likely to win at least 74 of the 121 seats up for grabs in the election, surpassing Abe's stated target of 61, a majority of the contested seats.

With the addition of Osaka Ishin no Kai and independents thought likely to support constitutional revision, the bloc will likely comprise at least two-thirds of seats after the election.
