Manufacturers and vendors of down duvets in Japan have been warned of a potentially rampant false-labeling problem with regard to the products' countries of origin — especially those claiming to come from France.

In one of the two warning letters seen by Kyodo News, the Japan Down Products Corporative Association said "more than half" of the labels on down duvets purporting to be French made "are suspected to be false."

"There is no established global method to determine where down is produced, and we also don't have an audit body for that purpose," said Masao Yamamoto, a representative with the association.
